Seems almost impossible to take all the secure measures to stay safe on the internet today. Over the years there has been multiple steps to secure your privacy on your computers.
Update your software. Stay up to date with the latest updates to insure you are being protected by future thieves.
Protect your personal information. Simply don't tell anyone your passwords. Keep your Social Security, credit cards, and any other information away from  a possible hacker can get into your computer system.
Protect your passwords. Most common password used is, password123, not a good idea. Come up with something creative where someone won't guess from knowing your personal interests such as names, dates, and hobbies.
Turn on two-factor authentication. Better to take that extra measure than to be sorry. Requires a password and an additional piece of information such as sending a verification code to your cell phone. 

Only give your personal information to secure websites. When shopping online read reviews from past customers to see if the website is a scam. To determine a website is secure, look for https at the beginning of the web address. Ex: https://example.com/
